About Us

Hello! My name is Liesl and I am The Farmer’s Daughter.

I grew up on a sheep farm in the Northern Cape in a very small town called Kenhardt, which is in the heart of the Boesmanland in the Northern Cape. The Boesmanland is simultaneously the most amazing and hardest place to live. The land is semi-desert and when the drought comes, you cannot imagine how the sheep survive. All around is nothing but stones and dry “bossies” (bushes). Then, when the rain comes, even the rocks seem to come to life. The land is covered in tiny flowers and green bushes. There is nothing quite like the smell of rain in the Boesmanland. I wish every South African could experience it at least once in their lifetime. Now I am lucky enough to live in another beautiful part of South Africa, in the Southern Peninsula of Cape Town.

The Farmer’s Daughter is a family business supplying fresh, free roaming, natural fed lamb from our family farm in the Boesmanland to your doorstep in Cape Town.

We believe in ethical farming as well as preserving our land for the generations to come.

By supplying you directly, we can offer you better prices and keep the number of sheep we farm with to a minimum thus preserving our land. Buying meat from the Farmer’s Daughter means: your lamb is guaranteed fresh from the veld, free roaming and natural fed, you have direct contact with the farmer who reared the lamb you eat, you can decide exactly how you would like your lamb cut and we believe you can taste the quality of life that our sheep have led in our meat.

How do I get my order?

You can either collect your order from me in Sun Valley (near Sun Valley Primary School) on the day your order arrives in Cape Town or we can deliver on the same day your order arrives in Cape Town. Please contact us for delivery charges.

How is the meat packaged?

All our lamb is cut up as per your instructions, portioned per cut , vacuum packed, labelled and frozen.

Why is all the meat frozen?

In order to supply you with the freshest and best quality meat, we freeze our meat straight after it has been packaged to maintain the flavour.

How long does it take to receive my meat after I place my order?

It normally takes about 3 weeks to receive your meat after you have placed your order. This is because we only supply on order, based on our customer’s individual needs. Once you place your order, each lamb has to be selected from the veld, taken to a RMAA (Red Meat Abattoir Association) approved abattoir and hung for a few days to enhance the texture of the meat. Each lamb is then cut up as per our customers’ preferences and frozen to maintain freshness before it is delivered from the Northern Cape to your doorstep here in Cape Town.

Why is there not a set price for my Whole/Half lamb order?

Because we farm ethically, we depend on nature to feed our lambs. At different times of the year, there are different amounts of grass in the veld so our lambs grow to different sizes. We can’t know in advance how big or small they are going to be so we can’t charge you a set price for your lamb. Instead, we weigh the lamb once we take it from the veld and then let you know what the cost will be.

How long can I keep my meat in the freezer?

It is safe to keep your meat in your the freezer for up to a year, though we think you’ll eat it much sooner than that!. Make sure that your packaging is intact and bear in mind that the quality of any frozen product does decrease over time.

What is the best way to thaw my frozen meat?

If you can plan ahead, take out your frozen meat from the freezer and place it in your fridge to thaw.

If you are short of time, place your packaged meat in cold water for a few hours. (Never try to thaw your meat in hot water as this will start cooking your meat and affects the flavour.)
